Help Me's Post-EVO2014 Interview with JDCR

Shortly after his big win at EVO 2014, Help Me took the time to catch up with the EVO champion JDCR and discuss his thoughts on the tournament itself and participating in it. Topics like which players at the tournament he was looking out for, thoughts going up against certain characters and interesting matches get discussed in the interview up on the Tekken Mura website. Since it's in complete Japanese though, I went ahead and roughly translated it for everyone to read.

HelpMe: Hello, I'm Help Me.

JDCR： Hello, I'm JDCR. Should we keep being formal?

HelpMe: Nah, since we're friends. This is an interview though.

JDCR: Oh I see, Seems troublesome ･･･

HelpMe: Let's start with your EVO victory, what are your thoughts on that.

JDCR: Thinking about EVO, this is the first EVO tournament I've ever been too. I would always hear about how Evolution was the biggest fighting game tournament in the world. There was a large number of international competitors at the event so it really did feel like this was the big global tournament. Me being able to enter the tournament was a special occasion and I've always wanted to win an EVO tournament, I've always felt like winning tournaments like MLG wasn't enough for me. I'm really happy that I was able to win EVO this year and I'm really grateful that TWITCH gave me the opportunity to enter the tournament.

HelpMe: I've heard that you had quite a hard time entering the tournament, in various ways

JDCR: Going to have to stop you here, this was a private matter. I can't really discuss it openly ･･･

HelpMe: Yeah, well it's not worth worrying about.

JDCR: ･･･

HelpMe: Anyhow, in this year's EVO I heard that there was a large amount of great players entered so getting to the Grand Finals was going to be hard. What did you think of the players you were going to face?

JDCR: At the start of the tournament, I wasn't really all that worried. Later on in the brackets though I had to face NAPS followed by Fab, Anakin, Ao and then Genkids. In the past, I've lost to both NAPS and Fab before so I was looking out for those two in particular and being extra cautious playing against them. Anakin is also another really good JACK-6 / P-JACK player but in his case, P-JACK is not a very strong character so I was able to beat him in the tournament like normal. And then in the top 8 group I was expecting to go play against AO and Genkids.

HelpMe: Ah is that so, the tournament really did feel like a really tough tournament to win. From what I've seen in your matches there was multiple times where you were in tough situations. Although it would of been great if you had lost.

JDCR: Huh, what was that?

HelpMe: Oh it was nothing. At the start of your match with Fab it felt really intense but you eventually managed to pull through. Do you have a knack for playing against opponents like that?

JDCR: I've always felt that my playstyle doesn't really go well against Fab's playstyle. He is a really patient player that doesn't throw out a lot of moves and I usually focus on the opponent's timings and try to counter attack or punish. His main team of Miguel is really strong fighting up close with Bob being just as strong on it's own. I was really looking out for when he was going to do things like d/f+2s and low attacks so that I can aim on getting the large counter attacks or punishes in. When the match first started out my hand was going crazy ･･･ Nevertheless after being able to withstand against him for a bit, in the 4th round I remember him doing a really bad Tag Crash where he missed and I was able to punish really hard and go in on the offense. After that happened I saw that he was mentally messed up by that so I was able to finish him off by keeping myself composed.

HelpMe: That's it?

JDCR: There's not much else to it.

HelpMe: That wasn't as dramatic as I thought it would be.

JDCR: Not really.

HelpMe: Onto your match against AO, I saw that you pushed the PS Home button during the match. At one point I thought you were going to lose but you managed to win after that home button was triggered. Can you detail what happened?

JDCR: At tournaments, I always put on the headphones that is provided so in that match when I put it on, I noticed later in the match that the headphone cable was in the way for me. When I tried to move the cable for the headphones during the match, I accidently hit the Home button causing the PS3 XMB menu to pop up. This is a serious matter in the tournament which ended up giving AO a free round but, I couldn't help it If I had unintentionally triggered the home button. This is one of the most perilous things to worry about in tournaments.

HelpMe: After that had happened you managed to pull through and win, can you describe how you did it?

JDCR: If you go back and watch the video of our match you might be able to see that I tried to adjust my stick several times. I was getting a lot of incorrect command inputs and missed sidesteps until I shifted it for like the 3rd time. To be frank, I think the stick wasn't fully plugged into the system during the match and it was giving me a few missed inputs. I was suprised by that since that was the first time something like that has ever happened to me. After I got that sorted I was able to play as normal.

HelpMe: That's really funny, since I know your crisis management skills is near zero ･･･

JDCR: What do you mean?

HelpMe: You don't remember? WCG Assault ･･･

JDCR: Nope don't remember.

HelpMe: At the time of Tekken Crash, your hands were shaking like crazy after you had lost. ･･･

It was huge at the time.

JDCR: ･･･

HelpMe: Well anyway, was that all there was to it in your match with AO?

JDCR: No that wasn't all, I was also thinking about my strategy against AO's characters of course. Although I find that it can be difficult to appropriately counter against Miguel's pokes, I found that AO's Alisa was the stronger character that I had to deal with so I focused on beating Alisa. I looked into what Alisa as a character could do and developed anti-Alisa strategies against her. I figured that If I focused on Alisa I would be able overcome and beat AO.

HelpMe: What were some of these Anti-Alisa strategies?

JDCR: Generally I find that Alisa has trouble attacking against opponents stepping to the left since her pokes to attack players moving that side aren't that strong. When she would do b+1s I would try to backdash away to avoid those and then just look out for her f+3 homing attack. I would be okay If I could deal with those moves.

HelpMe: Huh, I don't fully agree with that but I can see what you mean generally. She is a a tough character to succeed with.

HelpMe: The matches against Genkids at EVO were certainly very overwhelming. But for those who have never seen/fought against Genkids before could they have had a chance against him?! I myself expected him to have really close games with you.

JDCR: First of all, I was already familiar with the characters he played so I felt comfortable playing against them. Bob and Leo have good mix-ups and are well rounded characters however, since they have certain key good moves that they will keep using, they can get really predictable and they get easier to read ･･･ Kinda like Zafina. So I didn't really have to focus much on what attacks he was using. Additionally, prior to me going to America, I had watched some of Genkids' match videos online so I already had some idea on his playstyle.

HelpMe: So far we've talked about just the tournament but can you tell us anything else that was interesting?

JDCR: It was really crowded but, the Tekken Casino was really good. Tekken Casino was where all the American players went into after the tournament inside a hotel suite which would run late at night to play more Tekken. They charged everyone to enter but it was a good place to do some Money matches in. I had passed on the opportunity to go there on the first day since I was really tired after the tournament but I went there on the second day to get some more Tekken matches in and to drink alcohol which ended up being a lot of fun. Harada even came into the Casino during it so we all had a great time playing Tekken, getting drunk and interviewing him. By the way, my money match record at the Tekken Casino is 5 wins and 2 losses. I made $80 in there.

HelpMe: Boastful. Well then let's wrap things up, any words for all the readers out there?

JDCR: As always, I'm thankful to everyone that has helped me out or given me assistance. It is always fun to be able to play against Japanese players whenever they come. JDCR says lots of things that go back to that episode of ATP Live. I watched it again after Evolution. JDCR speaks English so well!

I wonder what JDCR meant about being allowed to enter Evolution but not being able to talk about it?

I like JDCR responses and I like his playstyle. Not being mentally overwhelmed by gimmicks but realising that they are just big risks begging to be punished.

The next Japan tournament is Mastercup. It's 5v5 not a one vs one, so JDCR will have to bring Help Me, Saint, Chanel or other Korean players. I don't know if JDCR would want to enter another mastercup tournament.
