VF5 FS Takes The Lead In Japanese Arcades

According to a translation from VersesCity, the most recent issue of arcadia magazine shows that Tekken has lost it's spot as the top fighting game in Japanese arcades. To be fair, VF5 has had 3 versions come out since Tekken 6 BR was released in arcades (R ver.B, R ver.C, and FS). All we can do now is look forward to TTT2.

Also in this issue is, Arcadia list its top 10 arcade games:
1. Gundam Extreme Versus
2. Virtua Fighter 5 Final Showdown
3. Tekken 6 Bloodline Rebellion
4. Super Street Fighter 4 AE
5. Melty Blood AA Current Code
6. Blazblue CSII
7. Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo
8. Street Fighter III 3rd Strike
9. Arcana Heart 3
10. Gundam vs. Gundam NEXT

Actually, that Gundam game is also sort of a fighter.

Wow, I always was under the impression that VF was way less popular in Japan. But as a Tekken player I think this is nothing but good news; it's good that VF is still staying strong and keeping competition to Tekken.

VF has been popular in Japan for a while now. Plus it helps that Sega keeps making revisions to the arcade game to keep things fresh. Plus there's another revision that's about to come out for Final Showdown. But it's going to be interesting to see how popular TTT2 is when it comes out.

Iv'e always wanted to get good at VF. I like that Jean character. His style is pretty cool. I hope they release Final Showdown here in the US on console. but yeah,as long as Tekken is above SF, then im a happy Tekkenner!

why they dont release vf into consoles anymore?

It's pretty sad for die-hard VF fans here in the U.S. I guess bc Sega feels the arcade market here isn't as strong as Japan's

I guess Sega doesn't even care about the console market at this point. They can't release a half-decent Sonic game after all of these years. Even when VF5 was ported to the console originally, they screwed that up. But I am holding out hope that someone over there has a clue and brings this game out to console. If not then it will be TTT2 and the next Soul Calibur game for me.

"To be fair, VF5 has had 3 versions come out since Tekken 6 BR was released in arcades"
Dude don't even start this... That sounds like very biased or Aris. You're all over when Tekken was on top of SF talking about it in streams (super sf4 arcade didn't come until december 2010) and whatnot but when VF gets on top you go like this? That's pretty fucked up.

"Final Showdown also debuted at #2 last summer before dropping down to as low as #5 before settling at #2 once again this month. Tekken 6 basically went between second and fourth during that period."

How do you interpret this so that the reason VF is on top is cause it's had more revisions? VF5 is still the core and that's a game released in 2006. Wouldn't it debut at a high spot and keep declining if that was the case?

"If you are wondering, SSF4 AE debuted at #2, but has been dropping every month."

Maybe the simplest solution is the easiest with people recognizing good gameplay when they have it. Not saying that it has to be true but to say that VF is ontop due to revisions / more games coming from a Tekkenplayer sounds pretty much out on a limb. VF5 when it came out competed against T5:DR in 2006 and VF changes are SUBTLE between revisions (lol at changes between ver b and c counted man). You know; not as in change the entire system (tekken4, tag) or throwing in 5 new characters per game.

VF is a good game. People play it for it's core, not for it's flash (there is none).

Tokido said Tekken is the most popular fighting game in Japanese arcade.

People don't play much VF according him

I can not help but notice that ALL of the arcade games are fighting games. Fighting games are not for everyone, you know. Maybe THAT is why arcades are in decline worldwide.

To be honest, I dunno if you should make an issue about which game is more popular, better, etc. It seems trivial/petty, especially since this is a tekken site and not a vf site, which makes it seem like you're trying to start a fight or something. The author himself said that the list might not be that accurate.

On the topic itself, I'd say VF will always be at or near the top as far as popularity goes. It's been that way since forever. I think I saw a discussion on this at vfdc, that VF despite being a relatively old game, has a large dedicated core of players.

To be fair Aris...not all of the revisions of Virtua Fighter count together on that list. Actually the other verions where on the same list in the past simultaniously.

@ ANUS MAXIMUS: Really? So where it says Tekken 6 BR, it is really Tekken 6 BR, Tekken DR, 5, 4, Tag, and so on, too?

Sunday, April 3, 2011 at 8:18 AM | Unregistered CommenterForest

That list is a monthly list which is why you don't see multiple versions of a game include like you would on the yearly list.
